I tend to read multiple books simultaneously, sometimes even five at a time. It’s not that I’m skimming through them or speed reading, but I suppose it’s more of a gluttony, that I want to take in all of the different perspectives and tastes of written text whenever I want, whichever I want.
There is no agenda for my selection of books, though a provoking force of curiosity. Books that can warm your heart, leave you reminders, and even scold.
Beginning of July, Josh and I joined our friends for a long weekend stay up in the Hudson Valley. It was breathtakingly humid and we experienced many a downpour of rain, so we were fortunate to spend our time in this gorgeous house with a lake.
I brought two books with me during this trip. The first one is "Kitchen Confidential: Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly" by Anthony Bourdain. It seemed many had already read this book as my travel companions started mentioning their favorite parts throughout. I can’t help but to read this in Bourdain narration, and you really learn about kitchen secrets (good, bad, worse) along with the episodes that led Bourdain to become the renown man he was, and still is today.
"The Richest Man in Babylon" by George Samuel Clason was the second book I packed, I keep myself in check by re-learning practices to financially educate myself. Many of these financial management books teach the same foundation of paying yourself first, saving, and investing wisely. This book shares personal financial advice and is written in parables.
I got through a lot of Bourdain’s book, but only a couple pages of "The Richest Man in Babylon", as is always the case when practicing reading. I did have the best distraction, the 1,000 piece puzzle with Impressionist artists and their subjects, which we completed in a day and a half, to find there were two missing pieces… so worth it though.
As we near the end of summer, I bid you more face-in-the-sun time and let me know what books are in your hands. xx
